Trident's Competitive Team provides a structured pathway from first competitive experiences through advanced age-group and senior-level training. Placement is based on age, legal stroke proficiency, endurance, meet experience, qualifying standards and coach evaluation.

Age-Group Competitive Pathway

From First Meets to Elite Age-Group Swimming

Our age-group competitive program progresses from Novice through J1 Silver, J1 Gold, J2 and Junior Elite (J3), with increasing expectations for technique, endurance, racing experience and qualifying standards.

Competitive Team placement is evaluation-based.

Swimmers must demonstrate the required legal strokes, endurance and practice readiness before placement. Advancement is not automatic and is determined by coach evaluation, age, performance, attendance, training maturity and meet experience.

Competitive Entry Group

Novice

Younger Competitive Swimmers · Evaluation Required

Novice is the first competitive group for younger swimmers who are ready to move beyond the developmental pathway and begin regular meet participation.

Entry Requirements
  • Must know all four competitive strokes
  • All four strokes must be legal
  • Must be able to swim at least 50 yards of each stroke
  • Must demonstrate appropriate starts, turns and finishes for current level
  • Must be able to follow structured team practices independently

J1 Silver

Next Level After Novice · Competitive Meet Experience Expected

J1 Silver develops swimmers who have progressed beyond Novice and are ready for more demanding training, stronger race skills and consistent competition.

  • Competitive meet experience
  • Ability to complete structured sets with increasing independence
  • Consistent starts, turns, streamlines and finishes
  • Developing endurance for increased training volume
Junior 1 · Elite Division

J1 Gold

Advanced J1 Training · Performance-Based Placement

J1 Gold is the elite group within the J1 division for swimmers demonstrating stronger competitive performance, endurance and readiness for more challenging training.

Entry Requirements
  • Ability to swim 100 yards in all four competitive strokes
  • Legal, consistent stroke technique under training conditions
  • Strong starts, turns, streamlines and race skills
  • Endurance and maturity for harder training sets
  • Silver qualifying cuts / USA Swimming BB time standards or faster
  • Consistent competitive meet participation and coach recommendation
Age-Group Advancement · Ages 10–12

J2

Advanced Development After J1 Gold

J2 is an advancement group for swimmers ages 10–12 who have developed a strong competitive foundation and are ready for higher training expectations, more race-specific work and continued progression toward elite age-group swimming.

  • Established meet experience and race awareness

Elite Age-Group Training

Junior Elite · J3

Top Age-Group Competitive Group

Junior Elite (J3) is Trident's highest age-group training group. This program is designed for accomplished age-group swimmers ready for rigorous training, championship-level competition and preparation for the senior pathway.

Expected Readiness
  • Advanced, legal proficiency in all four competitive strokes
  • Strong endurance and ability to sustain demanding training loads
  • Advanced starts, turns, underwater skills and race execution
  • Junior Mets, Zone-level qualifying standards, or comparable performance
  • Consistent meet participation, attendance and commitment
  • High level of coachability, training maturity and competitive focus
Goal: Prepare swimmers for high-level age-group competition and future senior-level placement when appropriate.

Placement and advancement are individualized and may vary based on age, ability, qualifying standards, meet performance, training readiness and coach evaluation. Swimmers may not progress through every group in sequence.

Senior Competitive Pathway · Ages 13+

Senior Training Groups

The Senior pathway is designed for athletes ages 13 and over, with groups based on current ability, training commitment, qualifying standards and long-term goals.

Intermediate Senior · Ages 13+

Senior B

3 Practices Per Week

Senior B is the intermediate senior group for swimmers transitioning into senior-level training while balancing school, activities or other commitments.

Entry Requirements
  • Must know all four competitive strokes
  • Must be able to swim at least 50 yards of all four strokes legally
  • Proper flip turns, open turns, streamlines and racing dives
  • Ability to participate independently in structured senior practices
  • Competitive meet participation is expected
Advanced Senior · Ages 13+

Senior A

6 Practices Per Week · Advanced Training Commitment

Senior A is an advanced senior training group for athletes ready for a full competitive commitment and greater training volume.

Entry Requirements
  • Legal competency in all four competitive strokes
  • Ability to swim at least 100 yards of all four strokes
  • Proper flip turns, open turns, streamlines and racing dives
  • USA Swimming B time standards or faster
  • Endurance and maturity for a 6-day training schedule
  • Consistent attendance and competitive meet participation
Highest Senior Levels

Elite & High Performance Training

These groups represent the highest levels of Trident's senior pathway and are intended for swimmers demonstrating advanced performance, commitment and training maturity.

Advanced Senior Performance

Senior Elite

Senior Elite is for advanced senior athletes who have demonstrated strong competency across all four strokes and are prepared for demanding, high-volume training and high-level competition.

High Performance is Trident's highest competitive training group for the fastest, most dedicated and most accomplished swimmers in the program. This group is designed for athletes pursuing the highest levels of performance.

Senior placement is individualized. Swimmers may move into the group that best matches their age, performance, qualifying standards, training commitment and coach evaluation rather than progressing through every group in order.
